We are currently working on the ‘Knitted Poppies for Stokesley Project 2018’ – an appeal for knitted poppies to help decorate the War Memorial on West Green. The aim is to have all the poppies knitted & fixed to a backing mesh then in position by about the 27th October, so that the display will be ready for Remembrance Sunday & the national Poppy Appeal. If you would like to join us, or knit some poppies at home, here is the simple pattern:

You will need: a pair of 4mm needles, red DK yarn & a small black button.

Cast on 60 sts using 4mm needles and red yarn. Rows 1-8 (K2, P2) to  end. Row 9 (K2tog) to end (30 sts). Row 10 (S2kpo) to end (10 sts). Break off yarn, leaving a long tail (20cms). Thread tail through the remaining 10 sts & pull tight, then fasten off yarn. Join the edges of the poppy together & sew the black button in the centre of the poppy. NOTE: It is essential to leave a long tail to fix the finished poppy to the eventual backing.
