CONFLICT AND RESOLUTION

Mendelssohn – Overture, Intermezzo and Nocturne from Incidental Music to a Midsummer Night’s Dream
Butterworth – Banks of Green Willow
Shostakovich – Chamber Symphony
Barber – Adagio for strings

In A Midsummer Night’s Dream conflicts between parent and child and between lovers, husbands and wives create anger, sadness and a great deal of amusement for the audience.  Finally, all is resolved and harmony is restored.

Banks of Green Willow was premiered in March 1914 and was probably the last of Butterworth’s own compositions that the composer ever heard performed; he joined the army in August 1914 and was killed in 1916 on the Somme.

The Chamber Symphony is an orchestration of Shostakovich’s 8th string quartet, which the composer dedicated to “All victims of war and fascism”.   Barber’s Adagio will release the intense emotion of the Shostakovich symphony and bring this concert to a peaceful close.
